Hey, ya'll! Murphy here again! This month we are talking about traveling with your pets. This week, we will tackle traveling with your dogs. Next week we will talk about traveling with your cats.

Before leaving a few things to think about. Will your pup go to the bathroom while on a leash? Remember that at all rest stops and most destinations, your dog will need to be on a leash when they are taken outside.

Have a printed copy of all of your pet's vaccines and microchip number printed out. Be sure that our hospital's information is on the same sheet. The alternative is set up a Pet Portal . The portal will allow you to access information about your pet including vaccines, medications and some basic medical information. If your pet has any diseases that are chronic or potentially life-threatening, be sure to have the diagnosis and any medication written down.

When traveling, be sure that you have an emergency contact available. The contact numbers on your pet's collar need to be current. Also be sure that you update the contact numbers with the microchip company that your pet is registered with. No microchip??? Well, we can fix that! On Sunday, June 22nd we will be having a microchipping clinic from 1 to 3pm. The cost for having the microchip implanted and the first year of registration is only $25! No appointment is needed. Just come to the office with your pet between 1 and 3 pm!

Does your dog travel poorly in the car? You can start with very short trips and work your way up in length of time. Even with that, some dogs will need medication for traveling. For those that just get too excited, tranquilizers often help your pet learn to relax in the car. For those that get car sick, medication is available that will usually help. Either of these problems? Call the office and we can help you out!

If your pet is on medication, take along more than you think you will need just in case you are delayed in returning. If your dog is on a special diet, be sure to have more than enough as well. It is not a bad idea to leave at least a few days worth of medication at home. That way, when you get home, if you had happened to lose the medication somehow - believe me it happens - you will have some back-up meds at home.

If you are staying in a hotel, be sure to confirm that the hotel allows dogs and find out if there are any additional or hidden costs. Also, take a blanket or bed for your dog to sleep on. It is courteous to avoid leaving dog hair in the bedding and carpets of a hotel. The next guest and the hotel cleaning staff will appreciate your kindness.

Dog supplies! Make sure your leash and collars are in good shape and the collar is fitted so that your dog cannot slip out of it. A few extra "poop" bags are also a good idea. Don't forget the food and water dishes! If you will be hiking and don't quite have room for a bowl in your pack, take a gallon zip-close bag. You can fill it with water and hold it open for your dog to drink from. Empty, they pack smaller than nothing else. Replacement cost is pennies. If going to the woods or a field, reflective collars are a great help. Swimming? Bring an extra towel for the dog.

A few warnings - never leave your dog in the car. Summer time sun will turn your car into an over in no time. When traveling out of state, you may need to worry about heartworm protection. Call our office to see if your travel plans will need to include some of the medications.

Those are enough tips for now! Any questions at all would be happily answered by the lovely staff at the hospital. Just give them a call!

Have a great summer and go outside an play!!
